Mae West, the American actress, once said that she spoke “two languages, Body and English.” Everyone’s heard of body language but how many are conscious of the language they give off with actions and gestures?
Why ‘Pleasing Body-language’ is Crucial? |
Even the most handsome/beautiful candidates invite intense dislike in interviews due to their facial expressions, posture and gestures. It is crucial because: 1. Surveys say, when all others are equal, 94% of selections are based on likeability. 2. 100% of the candidates are not aware of their body-language. |
A Little Theory: |
Body language gives off important signals about what kind of employee you would be. Studies indicate that body language accounts for a full 55% of any response, while what you actually say accounts for just 7%. The remaining 38% is taken up by "paralanguage," or the intonation, pauses and sighs you give off when answering a question. In other words, even if your spoken answers convey intelligence and confidence, your body language during job interviews may be saying exactly the opposite. It can even create mistrust in the minds of an experienced interviewer. |
How can one acquire Pleasing Body-language? |
Communication experts suggest to practice in front of a mirror. In fact, it is the stupid advice anyone can receive, because: 1. Poor facial expressions, gestures and postures happen unknowingly when we are anxious, or frustrated - won’t happen in front of a mirror! 2. Mirror can’t record, reply. We can’t analyse the body-movement. |
Why is it difficult for Colleges to develop Pleasing Body-language by traditional methods? |
Traditionally, body-language is an ‘ego-issue’. Even closest friends won’t comment or give a feedback on body-language. Mirror methods don’t work. It is crucial for candidate to get convinced on his/her own. |
Fine-tuning of body-language is important because
It ‘speaks out’ even when you are not verbally speaking.
Poor body-language sends out the messages, that might cause misunderstanding about you.
When we speak, we use much more than just words. We also communicate with our face, our hands, and even our own body. This kind of communication can be called "body language" or "non-verbal communication". Non-verbal communication not only includes how we move our body, but also hand gestures, facial expressions including eye contact, and how we use our voice. Psychologists estimate that between 80% and 90% of all of our communication with other people is non-verbal. We communicate a wide range of information non-verbally. We also show our feelings, attitudes, moods, hopes and wishes far better with non-verbal language than with words.
Professional conduct involves fine-tuned eye-contact, facial expressions, gestures, postures, and overall body-language.
Many professionals fail due to poor body-language - in job interviews, in sales interactions, in client meetings and in business negotiations.
Plain Truth about Body-language.
We hate others based on their poor body language. However, we are not aware of our own body-language.
Even close relatives and friends don’t give a feedback on our body-language as they fear it might hurt your ego.
It is important that you must understand and fine-tune your body-language on your own.
