The common factor that adds the ‘goodness’ to your output is the value/quality of the content, that you generated on the spot. And the common words that link them are ‘concentrate’, ‘understand’ ‘evaluate, logical’, etc, etc.

Whether you are in an examination hall, before and interviewer, write a twitter message or blog, you are judged based on the quality of the output you deliver on the spot. That calls for,

Good Listening:  It requires that the you fully concentrate, understand, evaluate, respond and then remember what is being said.(On the spot)

Good Reading: Reading something with a determination to understand and evaluate it for its relevance to your needs. Simply reading and re-reading the material isn't an effective way to understand and learn. Actively and critically engaging with the content can save you time. (On the spot)

Good Writing: The qualities of good writing are  logical organisation, smooth flow, arguments that make sense to the reader, development, unity, coherence, and correctness. (On the spot)

What is Critical Thinking?

Programs Products

“RESPONSIBILITY TO YOURSELF MEANS REFUSING TO LET OTHERS DO YOUR THINKING, TALKING, AND NAMING FOR YOU; IT MEANS LEARNING TO RESPECT AND USE YOUR OWN BRAINS AND INSTINCTS; HENCE, GRAPPLING WITH HARD WORK.”

― ADRIENNE RICH

Good Speaking: It requires commenting on immediate actions or events, or casually moving from one topic to another. Speakers are under time constraints which means that they must process language as they go, with no opportunities to go back and make changes. Speakers must also take account of relationships with others, adjusting their language according to the meanings they wish to get across, and responding to verbal or non-verbal signals from their listeners. (On the spot)

These are the qualities of Critical Thinking. Without Critical Thinking, you can’t become a good listener, Good Writer, Good Reader or Good Speaker.

Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action (Sezer, 2008).

We are not born with critical thinking skills. Therefore it is imperative to make critical thinkers out of children to succeed in their whole life. Fisher and Scriven (1997) state critical thinking skills are required to be taught since students' thinking skills are not enough to face the problems students deal with either in education or in daily life. Therefore, language teachers are required to focus on teaching critical thinking to inform them how to learn instead of just transmitting information that is what to say.

Nosich (2001) holds that most scholars believe that skills needed to begin to think about issues and problems do not suddenly appear in our students. That is the reason we need Spoken English Simulator, and Content-based Instruction/Theme-based Learning.

A person who thinks critically employs the scientific method for understanding the ordinary world. This is true because critical thinking mimics the well-known method of scientific investigation: a question is identified, a hypothesis is formulated, relevant data are gathered, the hypothesis is logically tested and evaluated, and reliable conclusions are drawn from the result (Stapleton, 2002; Angeli &Valanides, 2009). All of the skills of scientific investigations are matched by critical thinking, which is therefore nothing more than scientific method used in everyday life.

Wade (1995) identifies eight characteristics of critical thinkers: Critical thinkers involve in asking questions, defining a problem, examining evidence, analyzing assumptions and biases, avoiding emotional reasoning, avoiding oversimplification, considering other interpretations, and tolerating ambiguity.

Dealing with ambiguity is also seen by Strohm and Baukus (1995) as an essential part of critical thinking, "Ambiguity and doubt serve a critical-thinking function and are a necessary and even a productive part of the process"

What are the characteristics of Critical Thinkers?

According to Bracken, Brown, and Feng (2009) the importance of teaching critical thinking is nowadays obvious to all educators. CT is essential as a tool of inquiry. As such, CT is a liberating force in education and a powerful resource in one's personal and civic life. While not synonymous with good thinking, CT is a pervasive and self-rectifying human phenomenon.
